All About: Rarity

 Rarity

Rarity is a white Unicorn Pony and one of the main characters / mane ponies of 'My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic' The voice behind Rarity is Tabitha St. Germain while the her singing voice is Kazumi Evans.

Rarity's House: The Carousel Boutique
Rarity, the pony of pure grace, beauty and drama would seem like she belongs in the big city of Canterlot but in the episode 'Sweet and Elite' Rarity shares that she was born in Ponyville where she currently lives in her own shop, the Carousel Boutique. Although she is was born and raised in Ponyville, Rarity has big dreams of Canterlot and when she found out that Twilight Sparkle came from Canterlot, Rarity became fascinated and just absolutely had to give Twilight a make-over in the first episode "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic". Rarity was responsible for doing all the decorating and decor during the Summer Sun Celebration.

With more proof to Rarity's obsession of Canterlot, in the episode "The Ticket Master", Rarity shares her daydream about attending the Grand Galloping Gala and meeting Princess Celestia's charming nephew and the whole fantasy story of falling in love, getting married and becoming royalty. Her daydream actually becomes true when the mane 6 attend the Gala in the episode "The Best Night Ever" and locates a stallion that looked just like the one in her daydream whose name is Prince Blueblood. Blueblood was seen as an exceptionally handsome and charming stallion but in the end, Rarity discovers his true attitude as a selfish, narcissistic and close-minded stallion who expected Rarity to give all her care without him doing anything in return for her.

Rarity and her cat Opalescence
A cat named Opalescence keeps Rarity company who is supportive in "Suited for Success" but then gives Rarity trouble in "Stare Master" wherein Rarity asks Fluttershy for assistance towards knowing what to do with her pet cat.

Rarity is well-known for her fashion sense, love of beauty, cleanliness and the love of being under the spotlight. She doesn't only care about her own beauty, but also the beauty of other ponies which is shown in the episode "Boast Busters" where she tried to show Trixie up by making her a dress made out of curtains. Trixie bounces back by ruining Rarity's mane making her burst into tears and run away.

Rarity is said to have mannerisms taken after Hollywood diva Katharine Hepburn and personality traits from Gone With the Wind star, Scarlett O' Hara since many of Rarity's lines are rephrased from the 1939 movie with a complex and sophisticated vocabulary. Although a diva, Rarity is also resourceful and tough which was shown in "A Dog and a Pony Show" as she dealt with the Diamond Dogs when the others were afraid she was going to panic about getting dirty.

As mentioned, Rarity is known for her cleanliness, in the episode "Look Before You Sleep", she has a panic attack while she keeps trying to avoid the mud and rain in order to stay clean and not ruin her mane. Also in the said episode, her clean streak also is put to the test when she frantically tries to put books back into a bookshelf when a big problem of a tree inside Twilight Sparkle's bedroom was happening. This characteristic gets her and her friend Applejack into many arguments since the two of them are complete opposites. Also in the episode "Winter Wrap Up", Rarity becomes preoccupied in fixing Twilight's messy bird's nest all day when she should have been making many more nests.

Her fashionista sense is also displayed in many episodes even in danger like in the episode "Dragonshy" where Rarity still banters if whether she should pair her scarf with a tiara as they make their way to the dragon's lair. She also get's a whole spa treatment with Fluttershy in the episode "Green Isn't Your Color" and even gets false eyelashes in the episodes "The Best Night Ever" and in "MMMystery on the Friendship Express".

Rarity's love of being in the spotlight comes to the surface during "Green Isn't Your Color" as she shows her admiration towards Fluttershy and her grace. Fluttershy's natural poise gets her pushed by Rarity into modelling for her clothing with a photoshoot by Photo Finish. Rarity gets lost when the spotlight leaves her to engulf Fluttershy.

Young Rarity
Rarity's parents have given a brief appearance to the show in the episode Sisterhooves Social. Unnamed, they carry a different personality than their daughter with a carefree flow and a mid-American accent. Rarity's mother is a pink Unicorn pony with a similar body and mane to that of Mrs. Cake although her mane is closer to Rarity's royal purple mane but just slightly lighter. Her father is a white Unicorn Pony that carries a brown mane and mustache with extremely thick eyebrows compared to the other stallions.

Rarity and her little sister Sweetie Belle

Rarity also has a little sister named Sweetie Belle who was introduced in the episode "Stare Master". Sweetie Belle is a mixture of clumsiness and willingness to help which gives Rarity a test to her patience. Sweetie unintentionally creates messes when she tries to really help out. Though Rarity's patience is tested multiple times with Sweetie, the two sister truly care for each other.

Rarity's cutie mark  is three perfect diamonds. This is perfect for Rarity since she is as pretty as a gem and she adores them.
The story behind Rarity's cutie mark is also in the episode of 'Cutie Mark Chronicles', as she shares more about her past and her life as a filly to the Cutie Mark Crusaders. When Rarity was still a filly, during a practice for a school play a teacher complimented Rarity and her work on her costume design but Rarity the ever perfectionist insisted that the dress wasn't perfect enough and create new ones that still doesn't satisfy her tastes. Instantaneously, her horn lights up shoving her into a very large geode boulder but to Rarity's disbelief of her horn guiding her to her 'destiny' she was unsatisfied until Rainbow Dash's sonic rainboom happens making the boulder split into two. The boulder revealed gemstones which Rarity uses to add some spice to her costumes which allowed her to be admired by the crowd and achieve her cutie mark.

The way that Rarity is so eager to give with a happy heart to anyone whether it is a make-over or a basic helping hand makes her the perfect representative of being the Element of Generosity.

Rarity is Spike's love interest ever since the first episode "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" where he is bedazzled by her at first sight and calls her "beautiful". As the series goes on, the two become very fond of each other. In the episode "Green Isn't Your Color" Spike even admits to Rarity that he has a crush on her.
